‘Liverpool deal could now place FSG in nightmare scenario’
Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group have long been exploring an overseas takeover as they bid to forge a multi-club network in the vein of rivals Man City.
According to The Times (17 June), FSG are now exploring a takeover at La Liga side Getafe with current owner Angel Torres aiming to step down in 2027.
The Reds’ US-based ownership have previously explored deals for French side Bordeaux and Spanish second-tier club Malaga.
Getafe finished 13th in La Liga last season and are mainstays in the Spanish top tier after promotion in 2017.
But Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – has suggested FSG could face a nightmare scenario if they are “serious” about making the Madrid-based side a force in European football.
FSG could be victims of their own success if Getafe deal goes through, says Wyness
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness claimed Getafe have “potential” but FSG could be forced to step back if they become too successful.
Uefa’s rules prohibit clubs controlled by the same owners or directors from competing in the same European competition.
Crystal Palace have run into this issue after their FA Cup win, with part-owner John Textor also controlling French club Lyon as both clubs qualified for Europa League football in the 2025-26 campaign.

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “They’ve been looking at Bordeaux in France and then Malaga as well, down in the Spanish Segunda Division.
“Does Getafe make sense? Well, I’ve been thinking long and hard about this because I’ve been following Getafe for a while as I follow Spanish football very closely.
“And the question, I suppose, for Liverpool – and I’m not going to question their data research – but the question for them is are they going to make this a feeder club for Liverpool or are they going to make it big development project to really improve Getafe and make it a big club?
“There’s room in Madrid. There’s Real Madrid, obviously, Atletico Madrid. There’s Alcorcon as well, which I at one time tried to purchase for a potential buyer.
“They’re a small club in Madrid, but Getafe’s got potential. It’s had Mr. Torres, the owner for a long time and there’s talk of the stadium development being finished and then Liverpool could come in.
“If Liverpool are serious, as I say, it depends what they’re going to do with it. There is room for a big development project, but do they really want that multi-club situation of then having to play in the same competition as Liverpool? FSG will have to drop out at one club.”
“I presume it will be Getafe, in that case. But we’ve seen other clubs in Spain now, Man City and Girona had success – so it can work.”
