Liverpool decide on ‘priority signing’ when Jurgen Klopp leaves – sources
Liverpool transfer chiefs are set to prioritise defensive signings this summer, sources have told Football Insider.
The Reds are ready to bolster their rearguard after Jurgen Klopp’s departure at the end of the 2023-24 campaign.
It is believed defensive reinforcements have been made the priority signing after Liverpool spent big to reshape their midfield last year (2023).
A well-placed source has told Football Insider that cover at centre-back is now seen as “a top priority” with captain Virgil van Dijk set to turn 33 in July.
Ibrahima Konate has struggled with injuries since his arrival from RB Leipzig in 2021, while Joel Matip’s contract is set to expire in June after a serious knee problem.
Centre-back signing will be ‘key’ for Liverpool this summer
Joe Gomez can also fill in at centre-back but has often provided cover at full-back this season, while youngster Jarrell Quansah has played a big role for Klopp’s side in the 2023-24 campaign.
Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold have also struggled with injury problems throughout this season, further weakening Klopp’s defensive options.
Nevertheless, Liverpool boast one of the best defensive records in the Premier League – conceding just 25 goals in 26 top-flight games this term.
Only Arsenal (23 goals conceded) have a better record than the Merseysiders this season.
Liverpool are currently without a sporting director, but Football Insider revealed on Monday (26 February) that the club want to make an appointment in the next month.
Klopp has already lifted one trophy so far in the 2023-24 campaign, beating Chelsea in the League Cup final on Sunday (25 February).
Liverpool sit top of the Premier League, are in the fifth round of the FA Cup and will play Europa League knockout stage football next month.
