Danny Mills has warned Adrian that he will be busy against Arsenal tonight if Liverpool number one Alisson fails a late fitness test.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, the former England international compared the 27-year-old’s importance to the team as equal to that of Sadio Mane and Virgil van Dijk.

The Times have reported that Alisson and new signing Thiago Alcantara are both doubts for the game against the Gunners having missed training sessions over the weekend.

Adrian, who came under criticism for his performances in 2020, is expected to start between the sticks if the Brazil number one is unavailable.

Mikel Arteta’s side have got the better of the Reds this year – a 2-1 victory in the Premier League was followed by a penalty shootout win in the Community Shield last month.

When asked by Football Insider if Reds should be concerned about the possibility of Adrian starting at Anfield tonight, Mills said: “You always want your best players available and Alisson is clearly better.

“They are coming up against Aubameyang, Lacazette, Pepe – these are quality players. Liverpool will need their goalkeeper to pull off some saves tonight and while Adrian is capable of that Alisson is better.

“It is not a huge worry because Adrian is a very capable deputy.

“It is just like how you would not want to lose Virgil van Dijk or you would not want to lose Sadio Mane. It will always be a blow when you do not have your best players available.”

Jordan Henderson, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Joel Matip remain sidelined through injury but Joe Gomez returned to full training last week and is in contention to start.

His availability could allow Fabinho to return to the midfield, the Brazilian a standout performer in the win at Chelsea last week while playing as a centre-half.
