Liverpool expected 4-3-3 v Tottenham: 23-year-old axed in one change
By Dominic Toner
Liverpool are expected to make one change to their starting line-up on Saturday against Tottenham.
The Reds are set to make just one alteration to their team as they host Spurs in the Premier League.
Liverpool’s 23-year-old midfielder Emre Can is set to be dropped to the bench following the 2-0 defeat against Hull.
The German international has come under severe criticism in recent weeks for his performances as many feel he is too slow in possession and he is likely to be dropped as a result.
Meanwhile, Georginio Wijnaldum is expected to return to the starting XI and regain his place in the centre of midfield.
Dejan Lovren would be an automatic selection to replace Lucas in defence, but the Echo report the key centre-back is being assessed ahead of the Spurs match.
The Croatian was omitted from the matchday squad against Hull and it’s unlikely he will be available in time for the game against Mauricio Pochettino’s side.
The Reds goalkeeper Simon Mignolet is expected to retain his place in goal ahead of Loris Karius, despite making two high profile errors in the recent defeats to Hull and Chelsea.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has alternated between the two shot stoppers this season and is unlikely to make another switch just before a huge match against top four rivals Spurs.
They are set to go with the same back four as Lucas partners Joel Matip at centre-back, while Nathaniel Clyne and James Milner occupy the full-back positions.
Klopp is set to go back to the midfield trio that worked so effectively in the earlier stages of the season, with Wijnaldum playing alongside Jordan Henderson and Adam Lallana.
The Merseyside club’s fans will be hoping their frontline can rediscover the form they showed at the beginning of the campaign as Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Philippe Coutinho lead the attack.
That leaves striker Daniel Sturridge and Divock Origi waiting patiently on the bench to make an impact.
