‘Liverpool eye second centre back signing following Marc Guehi twist’

Liverpool are plotting major defensive improvements this summer with two new centre-backs on Arne Slot’s wish list.

The Reds are fresh from winning the Premier League title last term and are clearly determined to build from a position of strength as they prepare to go again.

Jeremie Frimpong has already joined the club from Bayer Leverkusen, while Florian Wirtz is close to joining the Merseysiders in a deal worth £116million.

Milos Kerkez is also set to arrive from Bournemouth in a deal worth £40million, but Liverpool aren’t stopping there.

Slot eyes not one, but two new Liverpool centre-backs

Jarrell Quansah is closing in on a move to Bayer Leverkusen and that means that a spot has opened up in Liverpool’s first team squad.

Marc Guehi is a major target and the Crystal Palace star has told friends that he wants to join Liverpool, sources have told Football Insider.

However the Reds’ move for Guehi will not hinge on the exit of Quansah, with Liverpool instead eyeing a younger defender to fill the void left behind.

Taking to X (June 20), Sky Sports reporter Lyall Thomas wrote: “Jarell Quansah set for £34m move to Bayer Leverkusen but Marc Guehi wont be his direct replacement. Liverpool ideally want a new young CB.

“Future of Konate more likely to have impact on any Guehi pursuit and it’s currently at a distance.”

Guehi is a perfect replacement for Konate

It’s no surprise that Guehi is a leading target for Liverpool with Arsenal and Chelsea eyeing his signature.

The Reds have been long-term admirers of the England star, as Football Insider exclusively revealed last September that Arne Slot has been “won over” by Guehi.

Konate is facing an uncertain future with his contract moving into the final 12 months and with Real Madrid sniffing around, it seems that Liverpool are looking to ensure that they aren’t stung in the same way that saw Trent Alexander-Arnold trade Merseyside for Madrid.

Guehi has turned into one of the Premier League’s top defenders at Selhurst Park, however the Eagles will sell at the right price with Crystal Palace planning to sign Ousmane Diomande.

It could be all change for Slot’s defence ahead of the new season, but if Guehi was to join, his partnership with Virgil van Dijk would be something to behold.
