‘Liverpool face big-money stumbling block to finalising La Liga deal’
Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group are now pursuing a takeover at La Liga side Getafe after walking away from deals for Bordeaux and Malaga.
According to The Times (17 June), FSG are looking closely at Getafe with current owner Angel Torres aiming to step down in 2027.
The US-based sports outfit have long been exploring an overseas takeover as they bid to forge a multi-club network in the vein of rivals Man City.
Talent-spotter Michael Edwards returned to FSG as CEO of Football last year (2024) in a bid to make those plans reality.
However, Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – has identified a potential stumbling block in negotiations.
Getafe deal could be too costly for FSG, says Wyness
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness believes the asking price for Getafe could be too steep for FSG.
The Madrid-based side, who are revamping their stadium at a cost of almost £40million, finished 13th in La Liga last season and are mainstays in the Spanish top tier after promotion in 2017.
Wyness insisted the move for Getafe is “smart”, but suggested FSG may have to pay big money to get a deal done.
He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “I think it is a smart move.
“This is the one I think that is the biggest catch so far. However I don’t think it’ll quite go through just yet because the financial ask from the owner at present, I think is a little bit rich.
“The only stumbling block will be the price, I think. That’s going to be the main decision maker right now, whether the owner gets what he wants out of the deal.
“So there’s still a sticking point and some other major strategic decisions to be made. But there’s no doubt the brains trust that Liverpool know what they’re doing.
“Getafe is a good target, certainly.”

Liverpool could accept Konate bid this summer
Meanwhile, Football Insider has revealed (30 June) that Liverpool may be forced to accept offers of between £40-50million for defender Ibrahima Konate this summer.
The Reds are concerned about the prospect of losing the 26-year-old on a free transfer in 2026, when his contract at Anfield is due to expire.
Sources say Konate has rejected Liverpool’s initial offer of an extension – raising fears he could follow Trent Alexander-Arnold and quit the club for free.
