‘Liverpool face historic blow’ after new Sky announcement

Liverpool will benefit the most from the Premier League’s lucrative prize money this term – banking more than £176million for winning the title.

That payment is linked to the English top-flight’s TV rights agreements – with a new deal set to come into force for next season up until the 2028-29 campaign.

Sky and TNT Sports are at the heart of the new £6.7billion agreement – which is a 4% increase on the previous deal.

It has already been announced that Sky will show 215 Premier League matches a season – up from 128 – with Amazon Prime dropping out.

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – has claimed that for the first-ever time, the next deal may not be as lucrative.

Liverpool have got ‘big problem’ with TV rights holders, says Wyness

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted clubs like Liverpool and their big-six rivals may have to give up more content to rights holders in order for TV deals to continue rising in value.

As such, the Premier League are proposing each club be obliged to allow dressing-room access, a half-time player interview or an interview with a substituted player at two home games.

Wyness claimed the next domestic TV rights deal struck in 2029 may stay at around the £6.7billion level.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “I don’t think the next deal will increase the dollar amount.

“I believe the next deal will stay at around the same level.

“I can foresee a decrease for the first time. Don’t forget, the last deal was an increase only because they gave away another 70 televised games.

“The big problem the clubs have got with dressing room interviews is that it takes away content for their own channels.

“Clubs have to decide whether that revenue stream means something or not.

“I think the broadcasters feel they are in the driving seat to try and get more than ever before, because the demand for sports rights is not as strong as it was.

“It used to be a guaranteed 10-15% boost every time.

“I don’t know if the added interviews will bring anything to the viewer. They’re just going to give cliched answers when they come off for half-time.

“You’re not going to get real information.

“Broadcasters are in the driving seat. If the TV rights figure is going to increase, the clubs are going to have to give something up. It could be more games, but also it could be things around the edges as well.”

Liverpool’s three-man priority signing plan revealed

Meanwhile, Football Insider has revealed (12 May) that Liverpool are prioritising the additions of a new striker, centre-back and left-back in the upcoming transfer window.

Transfer business will also be dictated by player sales, with the likes of Darwin Nunez expected to leave the club and open space for deals.

The addition of a new left-back has risen up the Reds’ list of priorities amid doubts about the performances and longevity of Andy Robertson.
