Liverpool fans: Xabi Alonso will soon be announced as the new manager after shock breakthrough
Liverpool fans are convinced that the impending double appointment of Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes means that Xabi Alonso will now become the club’s new manager.
Football Insider revealed on Friday morning that the Merseysiders are in advanced talks over a deal to hire Hughes as their sporting director.
It then emerged on Friday night that Liverpool are closing in on a deal to re-appoint Edwards in a senior FSG role overseeing the club’s football operations.
It is that possibility that is exciting fans of the club, keen for a world-class leadership team to fill the void left by Jurgen Klopp’s departure at the end of the season.
The German announced earlier this year he is leaving and most of his staff are set to leave with him in what will be the biggest changes at the club in nearly a decade.
Senior FSG executives John W Henry, Tom Werner and Mike Gordon view Edwards as absolutely integral to the success the club have enjoyed under their ownership and have been desperate to get him back on board to help shape the post- Klopp era at Anfield.
That possibility appeared remote after he rejected an initial approach from the US-based owners, but they have made a new move to offer Edwards a more senior role in the company.
And, that appears enough to have secured an agreement, with fans excited at the tantalising possibility of the peoples’ choice to be the new manager, Alonso, now choosing Liverpool ahead of Bayern Munich or remaining at his current club Bayer Leverkusen.
