Liverpool fans on social media loved what they saw from Xabi Alonso and his Bayer Leverkusen side during their 2-1 win over Heidenheim on Saturday afternoon (17 February).
Leverkusen held off a late comeback to secure all three points and continue their unbeaten record in the Bundesliga this season.
Alonso’s side sit at the top of the Bundesliga table with 12 league games remaining and now boast an eight-point advantage over Bayern Munich in second.
Jeremie Frimpong opened the scoring for the visitors just before the half-time break and Amine Adli doubled their lead with nine minutes remaining.
Heidenheim clawed a goal back through Tim Kleindienst in the 86th minute, but Alonso’s Leverkusen side avoided a late upset to record their 18th win of the season.

Alonso has been strongly linked to the Liverpool job following Jurgen Klopp’s announcement that he will be leaving the Merseyside club at the end of the 2023/24 season.
As revealed by Football Insider, Alonso is Liverpool’s top choice to succeed Klopp with the Anfield job now ‘his to lose’.

Leverkusen are back in action next Friday (23 February) when Alonso’s side continue their title chase with a clash against Mainz.
