'Rolls Royce', Our best ever signing - Liverpool fans drool over 92kg player for display v Roma
By Richard Parks
Liverpool fans took to Twitter to drool over Virgil van Dijk for his performance in their team’s Champions League clash against Roma on Wednesday night.
The Holland international, who ESPN FC report weighs 92 kg, played the full 90 minutes as the Merseysiders advanced to the final of Europe’s biggest competition by winning the semi-final 7-6 on aggregate despite losing the second leg in the Stadio Olimpico 4-2.
Liverpool conceded three times in the second half in Rome to lose for the first time in the competition this season but Jurgen Klopp and his players celebrated wildly in front of 5,000 travelling fans after the final whistle.
Van Dijk, who delivered a colossal performance at centre-back, sank to his knees and James Milner lay flat on his back in front of the travelling fans, who were kept in the ground long after the final whistle.
There were a few nervy moments late on as Roma scored twice in the last 10 minutes for the second consecutive week, but Van Dijk’s calmness, aerial dominance and sure-footedness stood out as the goals continued to rain in at both ends.
The Dutchman is a huge favourite among supporters who hailed his display on social media, with one hailing him as a “Rolls Royce of a centre-half” and another claiming he is the club’s best-ever signing despite his £75million price tag.
Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:

There’s absolutely no doubt that Virgil Van Dijk has been immense since his arrival in January, and for certain we wouldn’t be where we are without him.
A rock at the back, and worth every penny of his £75m, and more. #LFC pic.twitter.com/flc17Lwaew
