Liverpool fans furious as latest footage of Arsenal penalty controversy emerges
Liverpool fans are furious that Arsenal were awarded a penalty for a foul on Gabriel Jesus during their 3-0 win over Brighton on Saturday evening (6 April).
The Gunners have returned to the top of the Premier League table after a dominant display at the Amex Stadium.
Bukayo Saka opened the scoring from the penalty spot before second-half goals from Kai Havertz and Leandro Trossard sealed Arsenal’s 22nd win of the season.
Mikel Arteta’s side were awarded a spot kick just after the half-hour mark when Gabriel Jesus was fouled by Tariq Lamptey.
The Brighton defender had visibly won the ball with his challenge but connected with the Brazilian forward in his follow-through.
Referee John Brooks pointed to the spot and his decision was not disputed by VAR despite a lengthy check.
Liverpool fans flooded social media with complaints about Arsenal’s penalty decision, with supporters likening the incident to Alexis Mac Allister’s penalty claims against Manchester City earlier this season.
Liverpool have the chance to return to the top of the Premier League table on Sunday (7 April) when they face arch-rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford.
Arsenal return to action on Tuesday evening when they face Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-finals.
