Liverpool fans have reacted with delight on Twitter after Joel Matip confirmed that he was set to return training in the coming days.
The Liverpool Echo claimed he could be available for Liverpool’s Premier League showdown against bitter rivals Manchester United on January 15, but will miss cup games against Plymouth and Southampton.
Speaking to Liverpool’s official website, the 25-year-old revealed he is set for a return as he looks to overcome an ankle injury which has kept him out of the Reds last five matches.
“[It’s] getting better and in a few days I hope I’ll be back in full training,” Matip said. “That’s the plan but you never know how it will go.
“It was my left ankle, a ligament was damaged. At the beginning it needed rest but after this I wanted to play too early. We are really positive and hope that this chapter is closed.”

Considered the Merseyside giants’ best centre-back, Matip’s return will come as a huge boost to Jurgen Klopp after drawing 0-0 with Jose Mourinho’s side earlier in the season.
Liverpool fans have reacted jubilantly on Twitter, with many claiming that the Cameroon international is vital to Klopp’s side.

Matip & Coutinho back in training a big boost.
Jose Fonte at 33 years old, no thanks. On the decline & would carry a decent fee.

Since his free transfer from Bundesliga giants Schalke, Matip has played a crucial part in keeping five clean sheets during his 14 league and cup encounters this season.
Matip is set to remain with Klopp’s side this month, after rejecting the chance to represent Cameroon at the African Cup of Nations in Gabon this month.
In other Liverpool news, the Reds are expected to make 10 changes to the side that drew 2-2 against Sunderland on Monday.
