Lucas was named in the starting line-up against Southampton – and the club’s supporters were furious on Twitter with the decision.
Jurgen Klopp made eight changes to his side for the EFL Cup semi-final first leg clash at Southampton, with Lucas, Loris Karius and Emre Can the only survivors from their FA Cup draw with Plymouth.
The Merseyside club will be looking for a positive result to take back to Anfield as they aim to reach the cup final, where Manchester United or Hull await.
Lucas has kept his place in the side against Southampton and has been pushed back into a defensive midfield position.
Liverpool fans voiced their frustration on Twitter that the 30-year-old kept his place against the Saints.
Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:
Oh god. Not Lucas.

Lucas has been drafted into the midfield on Wednesday night as captain Jordan Henderson remains sidelined with a hell injury.
He joins Emre Can and Georginio Wijnaldum in the midfield and will be desperate to prove himself to Klopp.
The Brazilian has found himself on the fringes of the squad this season and has mainly been used as a make-shift centre-back.
He has been given a chance in his usual position as a defensive midfielder against Southampton and will be looking to nullify the threat from the likes of Nathan Redmond and Dusan Tadic.
In other Liverpool team news, the referee has been named for the upcoming game against Manchester United.
