Liverpool fans react on Twitter to Mignolet punching Tottenham senior man

By Dominic Toner

Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet was involved in a nasty injury with Vincent Janssen on Wednesday night – and the club’s supporters reacted with humour on Twitter to the incident.

The Premier League duo lined up against each other as Holland hosted Belgium in an international friendly.

Belgium keeper Mignolet was strong in an aerial challenge with the Dutch striker, punching the ball away but collecting Janssen on the way through.

Janssen hit the ground and stayed down before leaving the pitch after 25 minutes and played no further part in the match and will be in serious doubt for Sunday’s World Cup qualifier against Luxembourg.

Jermaine Lens scored a penalty for the hosts in the first-half, with Yannick Carrasco grabbing a late equaliser in the 1-1 draw ahead of upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

Liverpool and Spurs have both enjoyed strong starts to the Premier League season and are expected to challenge for the title.

The Reds fans have joked that Mignolet intentionally took out a player for a league rival  in the international meeting.

Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:

Janssen moved to White Hart Lane in the summer and has struggled in front of goal, but did score in the EFL Cup defeat to Liverpool in October.

Spurs are the only unbeaten side in the league and are expected to mount a title challenge this season, with Mauricio Pochettino’s team picking up experience from a third-placed finish last campaign.

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side are currently top of the table and recorded a 6-1 victory over Watford before the international break.

Mignolet, 28, has lost his spot as number one goalkeeper this season and summer recruit Loris Karius is currently the first-choice.

In other Liverpool news, their player have dominated the Premier League stats with four players inside the top 10.
