Virgil van Dijk spearheaded Holland to a 3-0 win over Portugal on Monday evening – Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to rave about his display.

The 26-year-old was named his country’s new captain last week but he lost his first game as skipper against England by a 1-0 scoreline on Friday.

Ronald Koeman’s men bounced back well on Monday however as they waltzed to a comfortable win over European champions Portugal.

Former Manchester United winger Memphis Depay opened the scoring for Holland in Geneva on 11 minutes, before former Liverpool star Ryan Babel doubled their lead.

Van Dijk then got on the scoresheet himself just before the break with a fantastic half-volley following a well-worked free-kick from the right flank.

That was his first goal in international colours, and Van Dijk also contributed to a clean sheet as he played the full 90 minutes of the fixture.

In the process of beating Portugal, Van Dijk and company broke Cristiano Ronaldo’s scoring run for Portugal, with the Real Madrid star having netted in his past nine international matches.

Liverpool fans took to Twitter after the game to rave about the display of their centre-back and his goalscoring display.
