Liverpool fans react on Twitter to Matip return to line-up v Southampton

By Harvey Byrne

Joel Matip made his return to the Liverpool starting line-up against Southampton on Wednesday evening – and Reds fans on Twitter have celebrated his comeback.

The 25-year-old centre-back has not started for the Merseysiders since a clash against West Ham on 11 December.

He made his first appearance in over a month in Saturday’s 3-2 defeat against Swansea, but he was reduced to a substitute appearance in the final moments.

The summer signing’s absence started with an injury, but Jurgen Klopp had since been reluctant to play him due to fear of action from FIFA.

The Cameroon-born player missed his country’s 2016 AFCON tournament and Liverpool had to wait until Friday before being told they were able to play their defender.

Matip has come in for Ragnar Klavan to face the Saints and many Reds fans on social media are excited to see him back in the line-up.

Here are a selection of their messages on Twitter:

Klavan has dropped to the bench following Matip’s insertion and it was a mistake from the Estonian which actually played a part in the build up to the goal in the first leg.

The defender made a rash clearance at a ball, which found it’s way to Jay Rodriguez who then found Nathan Redmond to score with a placed effort.

The young English attacker’s goal is the difference between the two sides, but many believe Liverpool are the favourites at Anfield with a place at Wembley and the final now up for grabs.
