Liverpool fans react on Twitter to possible long-awaited return for defender v Boro

Liverpool fans reacted with anticipation on Twitter after an Under-23s substitution on Monday night suggested Joe Gomez could be named in the senior squad to face Middlesbrough on Wednesday.

The 19-year-old has not featured for the first team since October 2015 but he has been back in action for the Liverpool development squad for a month.

According to This is Anfield, Gomez was substituted at half-time during the reserves team’s 3-2 victory against Arsenal on Monday evening as part of a pre-arranged decision from Liverpool staff.

It has prompted rumours he could be named on the bench for Liverpool’s Premier League clash against Middlesbrough on Wednesday evening after he also played in a central back three for the reserves.

Gomez suffered a serious ACL knee injury shortly after joining Liverpool for £3.5million from Charlton Athletic and he subsequently suffered setbacks in his recovery.

He is yet to feature under Jurgen Klopp but the German boss has spoken very highly of him after he made a huge impression on the fans during his early appearances.

The defender was initially used in the left-back role and made seven appearances prior to picking up the injury in the 1-1 draw against Sion in the Europa League but he is capable of playing in any position across the back four.

Lack of form for Alberto Moreno and an injury to Dejan Lovren at centre-back on Sunday may open the door for Gomez to come into the side for the midweek clash at the Riverside Stadium.
