Joe Gomez made his return to competitive action when he appeared for Liverpool’s Under-23s during their 4-0 victory against Burnley on Wednesday evening – and fans reacted with excitement on Twitter.
The 19-year-old completed the full 90 minutes as he and his side made it through unscathed to help the team reach the the quarter-finals of the Lancashire Senior Cup.

Gomez has not featured for Liverpool since their 1-1 draw against FC Sion on 1st October 2015 and is yet to play a single first team game under Jurgen Klopp after he picked up a serious ACL injury just six games into the 2015-16 Premier League season.
He returned to full training last month and played his first football game in over a year last weekend during a friendly 5-0 victory against Accrington Stanley but his competitive comeback for the under-23s signalled huge progress from the youngster.
Prior to picking up the injury, Gomez had impressed hugely in the left-back role for the Reds, despite signing from Charlton Athletic as a relatively unknown academy star.

His return is a timely one, given Liverpool’s current lack of options at left-back this season and he will no doubt be pushing for a position in the squad as James Milner’s understudy before the end of the campaign.
Fans are eager to see him return to the first team and his performance against Burnley was hugely encouraging.
Here is a selection of the messages on Twitter:
