Sources: Jurgen Klopp ‘calling every day’ as Liverpool work on Enzo Fernandez deal

Jurgen Klopp is “calling every day” as Liverpool work on signing a marquee midfielder in January, sources have told Football Insider.

The Anfield boss is taking on an even more hands-on role than normal as the Merseysiders look to beef up their squad in the upcoming window.

Benfica midfielder Enzo Fernandez has emerged as a top target for Liverpool with it very unlikely they can lure first choice Jude Bellingham from Borussia Dortmund in January.

Klopp laughed off the prospect of Liverpool signing the England sensation next month, although he made clear that the club are in the market for a new signing.

“January window? We are looking and if something happens, we will see. From a sports side, we are always prepared,” he said at his media conference.

Klopp is spearheading Liverpool’s transfer business with central midfield the number one priority for a manager who wants an elite operator with his best years ahead of him.

Contact has been made with Benfica over a potential deal for Fernandez, with Klopp a big admirer of the World Cup winner.

The Anfield boss is said by sources to be “calling every day” over potential midfield signings as he looks to help get a deal over the line.

Fernandez has a release clause of £105million and there were reports in Portugal earlier this week that Benfica have rejected an offer of £88m from an unnamed club.

The midfielder only moved to the Estadio da Luz this summer from Argentine side River Plate and is relatively new to international football with 10 caps so far.

However, his value has soared after several stellar World Cup showings in Qatar and he played the full 120 minutes as Argentina defeated France in last Sunday’s thrilling final.

Fernandez became increasingly influential for Argentina as the World Cup progressed after starting the tournament on the bench.

He was a sub in the first two games, before starting the final five played by the winners, including the full matches of all four knockout clashes against Australia, Netherlands, Croatia and France.
