Liverpool have been given the upper hand in the pursuit of Christian Pulisic with Borussia Dortmund preferring to do business with former manager Jurgen Klopp, according to a report.
The Sun claims that the Bundesliga outfit would rather let the 18-year-old, who is also attracting Arsenal and Tottenham, join Klopp in Merseyside.
Additionally, it is also stated that Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group are eager to sign Pulisic with the American link.
Klopp managed Dortmund for seven years between 2008 and 2015, where he won two Bundesliga’s and named the German Football Manager of the Year twice.
He left the club on good terms, following a poor 2014-15 campaign, but he is still though of very highly at the club.
The 49-year-old manager was also the man responsible for taking Pulisic to Germany at the age of 16.
It wasn’t until after Klopp left the club that the USA international made his senior debut, but it is stated that the German boss had “high hopes” for the bright prospect.
He has been handed an extended run in the Dortmund side this campaign with star man Marco Reus a long-term absentee through injury.
Pulisic has taken the opportunity with both hands, providing six goals and scoring two in 16 appearances from his midfield position, while also attracting England’s biggest clubs.
Football Insider verdict:
This is a huge boost for Liverpool, who could potentially sign one of Europe’s brightest talents. It would be considered a major coup for the Reds, with Tottenham and Arsenal also said to be interested in the 18-year-old. Klopp has so far brought plenty of tactical nous to Merseyside and has got the club in a good position to compete for the Premier League title. The signing of Pulisic would be another benefit of having the German manager at the helm and the young American could become a star of Anfield for years to come. He would also be handed plenty of first team opportunities under Klopp to continue his development and he could become a part of the club’s dynasty under the media-friendly manager.
In other Liverpool transfer news, the Reds are set to table a £22.5million bid for this 19-year-old.
