‘Liverpool have a problem with giants ready to hijack deal for Spanish jewel’
Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group are reportedly exploring a deal to acquire Spanish club Malaga – but face competition from the Qatari state, owners of Paris Saint-Germain.
As per The Athletic’s David Ornstein (29 March), FSG are weighing up a takeover with a delegation visiting the club’s facilities in February.
However, it is believed Qatari Sports Investment are also on the trail and ready to launch a rival move.
Malaga currently sit 15th in the Segunda Division after promotion from the third tier last term.
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted rival interest from QSI and PSG is a problem for Liverpool.
Paris Saint-Germain have ‘inside track’ in Malaga negotiations, says Wyness
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted the French club have “the inside track” on getting a deal done.
Qatari businessman Sheikh Abdullah Al Thani currently owns 51% of Malaga, while a Spanish hotel group own the remainder.
Season | Division | Finish |
2024-25 | Segunda Division | 15th (ongoing) |
2023-24 | Primera Federación | 3rd (promoted) |
2022-23 | Segunda Division | 20th (relegated) |
2021-22 | Segunda Division | 18th |
2020-21 | Segunda Division | 12th |
Wyness insisted QSI and PSG will find a deal space if they want to buy the former La Liga side.
He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “The problem Liverpool have is that Paris Saint-Germain are also interested in acquiring Malaga.
“Given that the Qatari ownership has 51% at the moment, there is a link with PSG and the Al-Thani family.
“That means they have the inside track on getting this deal done.
“It’s two big heavyweights ready to slog it out – but they may decide to let Liverpool have it.
“I’m sure that if the Qataris wanted it, they could find a way to make this deal happen.
“PSG will also be looking at this potential jewel in Spain. You can park a player down there to get work permits.
“There are lots of benefits, and it’s an attractive destination.
“It would be a great way forward for Liverpool – but it’s not a done deal yet. They were close with Bordeaux and a couple of other sides.”

Liverpool weigh up Cunha swoop
Meanwhile, Football Insider has revealed (31 March) that Liverpool are watching Wolves star Matheus Cunha ahead of a potential summer swoop.
Cunha is being lined up as a potential replacement for Darwin Nunez after his good form with Wolves so far this season.
Football Insider revealed last week (23 March) that Nunez is the first player in line to leave Anfield at the end of the season and could push immediately for an exit.
