Liverpool have ‘big problem’ after source’s Joel Matip reveal – pundit

Alan Hutton has insisted Liverpool need defensive reinforcements in the summer.

But, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Tottenham and Aston Villa defender said the problems at Anfield are “bigger” than just the defence.

On 5 February, sources told Football Insider that Liverpool are willing to listen to offers for Joel Matip in the summer.

That will mean the Merseysiders are in the market for at least one senior centre-back when the transfer window opens.

The 31-year-old has slipped to fourth choice centre-back at Anfield this season but has still been a regular starter due to the injuries suffered by Jurgen Klopp’s side.

His current contract runs until 2024.

As shown on Sky Sports (5 February), Matip scored an own goal as Jurgen Klopp’s side were beaten 3-0 by Wolves.

When asked if the Reds need to move on Matip in the summer, Hutton told Football Insider:I think they need reinforcements definitely.

He had a poor first half against Wolves, he was not great but it is bigger than just the defence.

Liverpool

They are all having their own individual problems so I think a lot of work needs done and Jurgen Klopp will know that.

It is the end of a cycle for a lot of these players and recruitment is going to have to be good. So I am not surprised if they are looking for a new centre-half to try and shore up that defence because it has been poor recently.
