Liverpool have ‘had their eyes on Arne Slot for a while’ – Keith Wyness

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted Arne Slot will be “expected to win the title” at Liverpool after replacing Jurgen Klopp.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested the Dutchman, 45, will be given allowances in his first season and will be judged in the 2025-26 campaign.

Slot is the manager-elect at Liverpool, with Football Insider revealing on Saturday (27 April) that they have agreed to pay Feyenoord nearly £10million in compensation to bring him to Anfield.

It is believed the attacking style of Slot’s teams, his personality and his ability to develop players were key factors in making him a top choice to replace Klopp.

He won the Eredivisie with Feyenoord in the 2022-23 campaign and recently lifted the Dutch Cup with the Rotterdam club.

Slot will be under big sack pressure in 2025-26, says Wyness

Wyness suggested Slot is in a similar position to David Moyes, who struggled to follow Sir Alex Ferguson at Man United.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “He seems to be the right sort of personality for Liverpool.

“However, it’s a whole different pressure coming into Anfield and handling the Kop, the pressure and the tradition.

“He’s going to have a very mixed feeling in the squad after how this season has finished. He’s got a big job coming up, and it won’t be easy.

“It’s not quite like following Fergie, but it’s not far away. Slot is now the next one on the chopping block.

“The pressure will be on, he’s expected to win the title. They’ve had bountiful years under Klopp.

“There’ll be an allowance in his first season, but after that – they will expect to be at the top every season.”
