Kieran Maguire: Liverpool have major advantage over rivals after Uefa reveal – thanks to FSG

FSG’s expertise may hand Liverpool a key advantage over their rivals under proposed new Uefa spending limitations.

So says finance expert Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about a potential overhaul of the financial fair play system.

The Telegraph reported on 19 August that Uefa plan to introduced a spending ceiling and ‘luxury tax’ for those clubs that exceed it.

The mooted system is similar to the Competitive Balance Tax in operation in Major League Baseball.

Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group are well-versed in the protocol through their ownership of MLB side Boston Red Sox.

And Maguire claims that their experience will give them a leg-up if the FFP overhaul is given the green light by Uefa.

“Under this new system, wages will be linked to a proportion of a club’s revenue,” he told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams.

“If you go beyond that, it seems as though it’s going to be a euro-for-euro super tax.

“If it does come in, there will be an acclimatisation and familiarisation period for all clubs.

“Liverpool and FSG will be able to leverage on their existing knowledge of operating within such a framework.

“I can only see their previous experience as being an advantage for them.”

Liverpool

Maguire told this site on 24 August that he does not expect Liverpool to be hit particularly hard by an FFP revamp.

Uefa’s current system permits clubs to make a loss of £105m over a rolling three-year period.
