Finance guru: Liverpool have made ‘big mistake’ amid new ‘surprise’ announcement

Liverpool and the rest of the Super League rebels made “big mistakes” last April and it is therefore a surprise to see the competition set out a new launch date so soon.

That is the view of finance expert Doctor Dan Plumley, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the latest developments behind the scenes at A22 Sports Management, the company set up to launch the breakaway league.

Liverpool and eight other clubs pulled out of the Super League almost immediately after it was announced 18 months ago, but Barcelona, Real Madrid and Juventus remain adamant it is the only way to save European football.

As relayed by Sky Sports last Wednesday (19 October), A22 have announced former German television executive Bernd Reichart as their new CEO.

Plumley claims that Reichart’s biggest task will be to get the supporters of the likes of Liverpool onside ahead of a planned launch in 2024.

“I expected it to come back around but I’m surprised at how quickly it’s happened,” the Sheffield Hallam University expert told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“I think what we will see here is that they have realised that they have made big mistakes in the first wave. A lot of that was on a communications level.

“We are going to see a lot more work in that area over the next two years. With Barcelona, Real Madrid and Juventus all still involved, it’s about getting the other clubs on board, especially the English clubs.

“It’s about getting the fans of those clubs onboard above anything else.

“When you push all that together, you’re looking at a big communications drive over the next few years to try and circumvent the problems they had when they launched.”
