Kieran Maguire salutes ‘hell of an achievement’ after £200m-plus Liverpool announcement

It is a “hell of an achievement” that Liverpool have maintained their commercial income at £217.6million despite the pandemic.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Reds’ status as a commercial juggernaut.

Liverpool released their annual accounts last Friday (25 February) for the year ending 31 May 2021, showcasing total revenues of £487m.

A small loss of £4.8m was recorded in a year when Covid-19 eliminated matchday revenue, which is usually in excess of £90m at Anfield.

The League Cup champions’ commercial income meanwhile was nudged up by £200,000 on the previous financial annum to £217.6m.

The 2020-21 campaign was Liverpool’s first with technical sponsor Nike, and 13 other partnerships were also announced in that period.

Maguire admitted he was impressed by the Merseysiders’ resilience despite the context of the pandemic.

“I think they’ll be very happy with this,” he told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“Their strategy in terms of ticket sales is that they only have 27,000 season-ticket holders.

“Therefore, they are selling roughly the same number of day tickets for each home match. That increases footfall to the megastore.

“That is very, very lucrative as a result. It was denied to them in 2020-21 and I expect it to show a significant increase in 2021-22.

“To actually keep commercial on a plateau given the pandemic is a hell of an achievement.”

Liverpool revealed that they recorded “record-breaking kit sales” in 2020-21.

They also opened up three new retail stores in Southeast Asia
