Kieran Maguire: This is the reason Liverpool have just turned down offer worth ‘£20m+’

Liverpool have not yet announced a cryptocurrency sponsorship deal because they are concerned about the backlash from fans.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about news from behind the scenes at Anfield.

The Liverpool Echo reported yesterday (24 March) that the Merseysiders have turned down tens of millions in crypto sponsorship money.

The club has surveyed supporters about their feelings towards the non-traceable digital currency and tan token schemes.

Liverpool have, however, launched a range of NFTs which also operate using blockchain technology and are similarly controversial.

Supporters’ trust Spirit of Shankly have voiced their concerns over both NFTs and cryptocurrency, which critics claim are volatile and unregulated.

And Maguire claims that Liverpool are unwilling to court further controversy with a crypto deal.

“You can see why they would turn down tens of millions,” he told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“They are aware that there are bodies at Liverpool who are representative of local fans.

“You have groups like Spirit of Shankly and so on. They are aware that those organisations will be holding the club to account very, very carefully.

“They won’t want to be seen to be rushing into things until they come up with something considered more palatable to those who represent the fans.”

Liverpool raked in £217.4m in commercial income in the 2020-21 financial year.

They made a total loss of £4.8m across the Covid-hit campaign.
