Finance guru: Liverpool ‘in the firing line’ as Super League stance confirmed

The Super League could be a direct rival to Premier League clubs like Liverpool if it is launched as a weekend competition.

That is the view of finance expert Doctor Dan Plumley, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the latest in the bid to relaunch the controversial breakaway competition.

Liverpool were one of nine teams in total and six from the Premier League to abandon the Super League after its botched launch in April last year.

But Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus are all still adamant that it is the future of European football and recently hired former German television tsar Bernd Reichart as the new CEO for Super League parent company A22.

They plan to launch a revised version of the continental division in time for the 2024-25 season.

But as relayed by the Liverpool ECHO earlier this month (19 October), Liverpool have confirmed that their stance towards the Super League has not changed.

Plumley claims that the competition could challenge the Premier League’s supremacy if it is played on the weekend and not in midweek.

“First and foremost, fair play to Liverpool for sticking with this stance,” the Sheffield Hallam University expert told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“I think if it would be a direct competitor depends on whether it will be a weekend or a weekday thing.

“If it’s a weekend competition, it would be in the firing line of the Premier League. But if it stays in the midweek, it’s less of an issue.

“That brings the UEFA issue back into focus. I think the Super League need the Premier League clubs more than the Premier League clubs need the Super League, Liverpool included in that.

“They don’t need it but we’ll see how it works out over the next few years. The Super League are very aware that they need the Premier League clubs and let’s not forget that the Premier League clubs are still stakeholders in the Super League.

“What will be worked on behind the scenes is how they get the Premier League, who are the market leader, onboard.
