Finance guru: Liverpool in 'perfect position' as Government 'scrutiny' imminent

Liverpool are in a “perfect position” to deal with any changes enforced by the new independent regulator for English football.

So says finance expert Doctor Dan Plumley, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the impact of IREF on day-to-day operations at Anfield.

The Government announced last Monday (25 April) that it will soon implement the proposals of Tracey Crouch MP’s fan-led review.

Among the proposals was an independent regulator to safeguard clubs from financial turmoil and preserve heritage.

There will also be a new integrity test for owners designed to replace existing background checks, which have been derided as not fit for purpose.

But Plumley claims that FSG’s stellar stewardship of Liverpool means that they will be bulletproof from Government “scrutiny” under IREF’s terms.

“The independent regulator is centred around financial stability checks, ownership etc,” he told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“There is also going to be greater scrutiny in terms of where the money is coming from in terms of connections to commercial partners.

“For the big clubs, most of them will be well set to deal with the changes.

“At Liverpool, the ownership seems secure. There has never been any suggestion of inflated sponsorship or anything like that.

“They’re in a perfect position, really. I think they will be confident of dealing with whatever comes from independent regulation.”

FSG have been formally involved with Liverpool since 2010.

The Merseysiders are eyeing an unprecedented quadruple this season.
