Liverpool invite centre-back to Melwood ahead of prospective move - report

By Harvey Byrne

Liverpool have asked for Coventry defender Cian Harries to train with the club, according to a report.

The Daily Mail has claimed that the Reds are looking to cast their eye over the 19-year-old centre-back at their Melwood training ground ahead of a prospective move.

The young starlet has risen to fame this season after making his senior appearance for the League One side on the final day of last season.

He has played 14 times for the Sky Blues this campaign and has established himself as an ever-present in the back four at his early age.

Harries was also rewarded with a new contract in November taking him up to 2020 with Coventry keen to keep hold of their emerging star.

However, it is stated in the report that the Midlands side view the opportunity is too good for all parties to turn down.

Liverpool have struggled with their back four for a number of years now with players such as Dejan Lovren and Kolo Toure not playing up to the required standards.

They have previously delved into the market for an up and coming defender from the Football League in Joe Gomez from Charlton, who proved a very good acquisition before his injury.

The Reds will now be hoping for similar success with Harries.

Football Insider verdict:

Little is known of Harries and he is currently playing for a struggling Coventry, who are sat in 22nd place in the English third tier. However, there have been a number of players in recent history to make the move from the Football League to the top flight and have impressed. Harries could be another success story and it is clear that Liverpool need a new centre-back. The 19-year-old is unlikely to come in and become an instant hit, but he could secure the club a solid pair of boots in their defensive line in the future.

In other Liverpool transfer news, the Reds have rejected a number of approaches for this midfielder.
