Liverpool: Keith Wyness shares what his Spanish contacts say about Xabi Alonso return to Anfield

Liverpool have Xabi Alonso waiting in the wings to take over from Arne Slot, according to Keith Wyness.

The former Everton chief executive, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, has been talking to his contacts in Spain about Alonso becoming Liverpool’s next manager.

Arne Slot is expected to be sacked at the end of the season, and Alonso is currently out of work and available to be hired.

Alonso has won the Bundesliga with Bayer Leverkusen, and had a spell in charge of Real Madrid this season before being sacked in January.

The Spaniard had a five-year spell at Anfield during his playing career, and is a popular candidate to replace Slot as Liverpool manager.

Liverpool fans ‘unhappy’ with Arne Slot

Everton’s former chief Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes Liverpool fans are currently lacking belief in the team due to Slot’s management.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness states that Alonso is waiting to return to Anfield when Slot is sacked.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “I know that there are two things that a lot of my Liverpool friends and contacts are certainly moaning about Arne Slot just now.

“There’s been a real lack of belief. The Liverpool fan base, while they don’t want to go public with it, are certainly unhappy with the way the team’s been playing and performing.

“And Xabi Alonso, from my point of view and my contacts in Spain are saying that, yes, he would be the one in waiting to come back.”

Concern over Liverpool’s Adam Wharton move

The Reds are set for another active summer transfer window after failing to defend their Premier League title, with Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton on their list of targets.

The 22-year-old has attracted interest from multiple Premier League and European clubs due to his performances with the Eagles.

However, former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Liverpool have concerns about Wharton’s defensive abilities.

Crystal Palace could demand up to £70million for Wharton, but that will not put Liverpool off trying to agree a deal.
