Liverpool left shattered by ‘horrific’ double blow – pundit
Liverpool will find it difficult to recover from missing out on key transfer targets.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Spurs defender Alan Hutton has claimed that Chelsea heavily impacted the Reds’ transfer ambitions this season.
Chelsea completed a British-record deal for Moises Caicedo in a deal worth up to £115m.
They signed the player from Brighton after they agreed to improve on Liverpool’s £111m offer that had been accepted two days earlier.
Caicedo informed Liverpool on the Friday before the season began that he wanted to join Chelsea, which opened the door again for the London club to renegotiate.
With Liverpool losing out on Caicedo, Hutton believes that Jurgen Klopp will find it challenging to sign an ideal replacement.
“it will be difficult for Liverpool to sign an alternative,” he told Football Insider.
“You would have thought Liverpool would have been the first choice, especially after the season Chelsea had last season.
“We understand obviously Todd Boehly’s getting in there and he’s spending money, and he’s given out long contracts, probably for high wages and it’s maybe why they lean towards that.
“But I think in terms of Liverpool moving forward, they need that defensive midfielder to come in that makes them stronger.
“They’ve had a few out but I think if they were to get that defensive midfielder and they sign a top one, I think it could make them really better.
“But, as you said, Chelsea royally mugged The Reds off.

“I mean, they must feel horrific at this moment in time that these two top targets that they’re going in for decided to go both to Chelsea.
“So it’s tough one to swallow.”
