Liverpool line up ‘five summer signings’ after Van Dijk & Salah ‘last hurrah’

Liverpool will be preparing for life after veterans Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk even if the star duo pen new contracts at Anfield.

Salah, 32, and Van Dijk, 33, will be out of contract at the end of the 2024-25 campaign and questions remain over the duo’s long-term futures on Merseyside.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, 26, is also out of contract in June and is being courted by Spanish giants Real Madrid.

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted the current squad at Liverpool is enjoying a “last hurrah” as they fight for three titles in England and Europe.

Liverpool squad in ‘last hurrah’ with treble still on

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness claimed Liverpool will need five new recruits if all three players choose to depart.

The Reds only added fringe winger Federico Chiesa to the squad in the last two windows – but Arne Slot is widely expected to be given the chance to mould his squad in the upcoming summer window.

Wyness claimed Liverpool could also look to lean on their academy products despite a young side recently losing in the FA Cup against Plymouth.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “It would seem as though it’s a bit of a last hurrah for this squad.

“But they’ve got academy products coming through who look very strong, despite getting beaten by Plymouth in the FA Cup.

“They have a squad who can carry on into next season, but they will add quality players.

“If Van Dijk and Salah do go, then of course – I think they would need five players to really replace those anchors in the squad.”

Darwin Nunez sale could form part of Liverpool overhaul

Wyness has previously told Football Insider (12 February) that Liverpool star Darwin Nunez will head to the Saudi Pro League this summer.

The striker had been linked with a move away from Anfield in January, but no deal materialised despite interest from clubs in the Middle East.

Sources have told Football Insider (11 February) that Liverpool would prefer to sell Nunez over Diogo Jota – who has been linked with Arsenal.
