Liverpool made huge transfer blunder after snubbing perfect Mohamed Salah replacement
Mohamad Salah’s alarming drop-off this season is a reminder that Liverpool could have signed a perfect successor to the Egyptian.
Salah has cemented his place as one of the best Premier League wingers with 190 goals and 89 assists in the competition.
The 33-year-old fired Liverpool to their second Premier League title last term with an eye-watering 29 goals and 18 assists in 38 matches, as well as seven goal involvements in the Champions League.
But during a period where the Reds have lost five of their last six matches, Salah’s form has nosedived at Liverpool, with the Egyptian scoring just three goals in nine top-flight appearances in 2025/26.
Mick Brown told Football Insider that Arne Slot is concerned about Salah after watching his rapid decline, and the club’s hierarchy could have already addressed the problem by signing a replacement.

Liverpool should have signed Bryan Mbeumo to replace Mohamed Salah
Liverpool knew that they’d eventually need to replace their goal-scoring machine, but they perhaps didn’t envisage him struggling as much as he has.
In January 2025, there were talks of Salah receiving a stake in Al-Hilal should he have chosen to move to Saudi Arabia in the future.
But speculation was quickly shut down when Salah signed a new two-year contract at Liverpool in April, with his fresh deal expiring in June 2027.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing, though, and after watching their No.11 decline rapidly, they may have wished they had signed Bryan Mbeumo to rival him for the right wing spot.
Liverpool cooled their interest in Mbeumo before the summer transfer window opened after Salah signed his contract.
However, the Reds initially up a £60million bid for the 26-year-old, though the decision to pull out of the race and let Manchester United swoop in was a big mistake.
Mbeumo’s stunning start to life at Manchester United
Mbeumo possesses all of the attributes to be classed as an ideal Salah replacement, including his explosiveness in transition, upper body strength and clinical finishing.

The Cameroon star boasts a lethal left foot that has destroyed Premier League defences and he’s continued his destruction at Old Trafford.
Following his 20-goal campaign at Brentford, Mbeumo’s brace against Brighton took him to four goals in his first nine appearances for the Red Devils.
Capable of a moment of magic, as seen with his finish at Anfield, the former Bees forward would have slotted perfectly into the inside right position at Liverpool.
But instead, he’s becoming a fan favourite at Man United and Reds supporters will be kicking themselves that a bid was never lodged.
