Liverpool have been installed as favourites to sign Barcelona midfielder Javier Mascherano in January, according to leading bookmaker Sky Bet.
A report in the Mirror has claimed that although he still has two years left on his contract with the Spanish giants, he is considering an early exit.
Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain have also been credited with an interest at 16/1 and 18/1 respectively.
Since leaving Anfield in 2010 the player has enjoyed an extremely successful career with the Barcelona, winning a host of trophies including the La Liga, Spanish Cup and Champions League.
Football Insider verdict:
There is no doubt that Mascherano is still an extremely talented footballer. At 33 years of age, he is coming to the end of his career, but he would still be a good signing for any Premier League club given his wealth of experience. He has already played in the Premier League with the Reds and West Ham, and would make his presence felt in the Liverpool defence. He spent three years at Anfield before leaving for Spain and has spoken regularly about his ongoing affections for the Premier League club. However, it was reported recently that he wants to end his career with another former club River Plate in his home country of Argentina.
