Liverpool handed major boost ahead of Manchester United clash – report

By Emma Sanders

Liverpool have been handed a major boost ahead of their clash against Manchester United as Jordan Henderson could be available for selection, according to a report.

According to the Liverpool Echo, the skipper took part in a successful training session on Thursday just days before the trip to Old Trafford.

Henderson was forced to miss Wednesday evening’s EFL Cup semi-final clash against Southampton after being left out of the squad against Plymouth.

He picked up a knock in the 1-0 victory against Manchester City on New Year’s Eve and has been out of action since but could be in line for a return on Sunday.

The report stated Joel Matip also completed a full training session at Melwood, though it is unlikely he will be selected for the side ahead of the United clash after five weeks out.

The centre-back could be named in the squad though and that will be a real boost for Liverpool who have been without their best defender for seven games.

Matip joined on a free from Schalke in the summer and has impressed hugely alongside Dejan Lovren at centre-back.

While the news of Matip’s recovery will come as positive news, it is Henderson’s potential return which will be the most welcome news for Liverpool fans.

Football Insider verdict:

Henderson’s absence was clear to see against Southampton so Jurgen Klopp will be eager to bring his skipper back into the side. It will be a crucial tie and having Matip back will also be a good option, even if he is still not 100% match fit. There will be no time for resting – if Henderson is able to play he simply must. Victory for Liverpool will aid their title chase but defeat could prove very costly and they could go from second place to fifth in a matter of days. Emre Can looked sluggish against the Saints so he would likely be the player to give way.

In other Liverpool news, this is the player the Reds need back from injury the most.
