Liverpool make Mohamed Salah U-turn ‘as we speak today’
Alexander Isak’s injury blow will have big consequences for the future of Mohamed Salah at Liverpool.
That is according to ex-Everton, Aston Villa, and Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes Salah’s Liverpool departure could be delayed until the summer.
Salah had claimed he was being “thrown under the bus at Liverpool,” and the 33-year-old was subsequently dropped from the squad by manager Arne Slot.
The Egyptian was likely to head to Saudi Arabia in January, but an injury picked up by Alexander Isak against Tottenham is now expected halt those plans.
Mohamed Salah set to stay at Liverpool
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes Slot will need Salah to remain at the club with Isak out injured.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness thinks that Salah wants to depart Anfield on a positive note.
He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Yes, I think it has. And as we speak this morning, he scored a late winner last night for Egypt and the African Cup of Nations. I think that all of a sudden we’re going to see peace break out in Liverpool and Salah is going to stay at least until the summer.
“But I think he’ll move in the summer. I don’t think they can afford to let him go now after the injuries with Isak. Although, you know, they would claim that [Hugo] Ekitike, and they haven’t given [Federico] Chiesa a real chance either.
“So they have potential replacements. But I do think that Salah is going to come back from AFCON looking ready to go out on a high rather than leave on the low, and that would have definitely been happening if he’d gone in January.
“I think we’ll see that resolved, and I do think the Isak injury has played a part in that as well, yes.”
Liverpool accelerate Antoine Semenyo chase
The injury to Isak, and with Salah currently at the African Cup of Nations, Liverpool could speed up their pursuit of Antoine Semenyo.
The Bournemouth winger is wanted by a number of Premier League rivals, with the 25-year-old having a £65million release clause in his contract.
Semenyo has eight goals and three assists in 17 Premier League appearances this season for the Cherries.
