‘Liverpool making a big loss on Darwin Nunez as transfer close – they accept it’
Liverpool look set to call time on Darwin Nunez’s spell at Anfield this summer after his meagre contribution to their title-winning campaign.
It has been widely reported that Napoli are the club most likely to land the Uruguay international forward – who has been allowed to leave the Reds.
The 26-year-old hit just seven goals in 47 appearances across all competitions for Liverpool last season – with Arne Slot taking a dim view of his contribution in his first season at the club.
Nunez joined Liverpool in 2022 for an initial fee of £64million – rising to £85million after add-ons.
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted Liverpool have to balance the books and will have prepared to take a big loss on the flop this summer.

‘Nunez signing just hasn’t worked’, says Wyness
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness backed Nunez to succeed if he makes the move to Italy – or if Spanish clubs make a last-minute move to land him.
Nunez has hit just 40 goals in 143 appearances for the Reds – who handed him a contract running until June 2028.

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “I think Liverpool would be making a big loss here, and they’ll have settled for that loss as well.
“They’ve had, what is it now, at least two or three seasons out of Nunez – it hasn’t quite worked.
“There’s been all the talk about the easier chances that he’s missed, but he works very hard.
“For him, for his point of view, I think a break into a different style of football, i.e. Spain, would do him very well.
“I think he’d do extremely well in Spain and also in Italy as well. There’s obviously talk of him moving on and Liverpool are prepared to accept that.
“They’ve got to balance the books and they can’t always get it right – he’s been certainly a very valuable squad player and he’s done well.
“I think he should go and they should get as much as they can for him. It won’t be the full value, but nevertheless, accept the loss, move on.”

Elliott also set for Liverpool exit
Meanwhile, Football Insider has revealed (24 June) that Brighton are “confident” of striking a deal for Liverpool fringe star Harvey Elliott.
The Seagulls are among the front-runners to land the 22-year-old before the 1 September deadline later this summer.
Brighton are smart operators and are capable of meeting Liverpool’s £40million asking price for Elliott after their big-money transfer business in recent windows.
