Liverpool move stuns Kieran Maguire – ‘it goes completely against FSG’

FSG will not want the new anchoring rules to be introduced as it could stop them from making profit at Liverpool.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who exclusively told Football Insider that the premise of the new financial rules “goes completely against the wheelhouse of FSG”.

Top flight clubs met on Monday (29 April) and voted to introduce new anchoring financial rules.

All Premier League clubs will now have to comply with a hard spending cap around five times the size of the lowest club’s earnings.

It is understood that only Aston Villa, Manchester City and Manchester United voted against the proposal during Monday’s meeting, with Liverpool among the 16 voting in favour (Chelsea abstained from voting).

Liverpool latest move goes against interests of FSG

The new regulations are now set to be introduced alongside new squad cost ratio systems in the 2025-26 season.

However, Maguire revealed that he thought Liverpool would oppose the rules as it conflicts with the interests of owners FSG.

I thought that Liverpool were likely to oppose the rules because owners FSG are mainly concerned about making profit,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

The anchoring rules are focused on what you can spend rather than how much money you can actually make in terms of profit.

That premise goes completely against the wheelhouse of FSG.

They view Liverpool purely as an investment rather than as a football club in its own right.
