Liverpool news: Borson suggests what Federico Chiesa is really getting paid

Liverpool will likely be paying Federico Chiesa around £200,000 a week after he recently joined the club from Juventus.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the Italy international will probably have received an uplift on his previous contract with the Serie A giants because he could have left on a free transfer next summer.

Liverpool have paid £10million up front to sign the winger, while the deal includes a further £2.5million in potential add-ons dependent on the Merseysiders winning the Premier League and Champions League.

Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport reported on 28 August Chiesa will earn around €7.5million (£6.31million) net after making the move to Anfield.

Liverpool likely to have handed Federico Chiesa improved wages

Borson believes the idea the 26-year-old joined on a “bargain-basement deal” is slightly naive due to how much he will earn in wages.

He told Football Insider: “The thing about Chiesa is he was on very big money at Juventus and they are very big payers.

“He was also coming into the last year of his contract, so there has been a bit of confusion or controversy about his wages.

“My understanding is that he was paid the best part of €10million at Juventus because of the way their wages are reported are often net, so he’s paid €5million net.

“But that’s net not only of tax but also of social security and other payments of that sort, so he was paid the best part of about €10million.

“I did see Gabriele Marcotti suggest it was €13million. But either way, he was a player coming into the last year of his contract and is very likely to have had an uplift given that he could have gone for a bosnan.

“I suspect he’s being paid at least £200,000 a week at Liverpool.

“A lot of the Liverpool fans have suggested that I am exaggerating that, but it’s been reported in Gazzetta that he’s on €7.5million, plus a €1million bonus before tax, which would be commensurate with the £200,000 that I’m suggesting.

“Clearly, we don’t know for sure exactly what his terms are. But I think the idea that he’s a real bargain-basement deal is a little bit naive.

“That said, the fee is low and he is a quality player and, if he can avoid injury, then he will be a good signing for that money.”
