Liverpool news: James Milner tipped for coaching role as Klopp contract stance revealed

Noel Whelan has claimed James Milner could begin a “brilliant” career in coaching at Liverpool.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the 36-year-old will be decreasingly interested in his game time at the Anfield club.

Numerous reports suggested Liverpool had offered Milner a new contract at the club with his current deal set to expire at the end of this season.

As quoted by the Liverpool Echo (24 February), manager Jurgen Klopp insisted he has “indicated his wish” that the midfielder remains a Reds player.

However, the German clarified the club’s stance and revealed that Milner has not yet been offered a contract.

Whelan insisted the veteran is “so important” to Liverpool alongside captain Jordan Henderson.

“I don’t think he’ll want to leave,” he told Football Insider‘s Russell Edge.

“When you’re a part of a club like Liverpool and their success, and you’re still in the plans – he’ll want to be a part of it.

“It’s not just about game time anymore for Milner. He’ll be so important around that squad and in the dressing room. He’s a leader and a club captain alongside Jordan Henderson.

“Their habits will shine through to the younger players, and when you have a number of foreign players it is always important to have that English-based core.

“He knows the club, knows what it’s all about – and that’s why they were so keen to keep Henderson as well.

“I’ve got no doubt that Milner will go on to be a brilliant coach as well – and that may well be at Liverpool.”
