Liverpool news: Losing ‘unbelievable’ James Milner will be ‘big blow’ after source’s talks update today – pundit

It is “crucial” Liverpool keep hold of James Milner because of his “unbelievable” professionalism, according to Kevin Phillips.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former European Golden Shoe winner admitted it would be a “big blow” if Jurgen Klopp lost Milner at the end of the season.

The versatile veteran is out of contract at Anfield at the end of the current campaign.

A Liverpool source told Football Insider today that talks are underway with the 36-year-old over a one-year extension to his contract.

Jurgen Klopp is keen to keep hold of Milner, who can fill in at a number of positions as well as being a key influence off the pitch.

“It would be a big blow to lose him,” Phillips told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs.

“It depends on the player. Does he want to play regularly or is he happy with the role in the background, talking to the young players, helping young players develop and being a leader alongside Jordan Henderson?

“Naturally, I’m not surprised Klopp wants to have contract talks with him because he’s an unbelievable professional.

“He’s a player you want to have in and around your group. He’s not necessarily going to play every week but not only is he not going to cause you any issues, but he’s also a massive help around the dressing room.

“It’s crucial to have people like that in your football club.”

Milner has played 25 times across all competitions this season, including seven Premier League starts.

The former England international has 275 Liverpool appearances under his belt and has won the Premier League and Champions League with the club.
