Liverpool news: Pundit hails ‘Klopp and Edwards’ after £292m reveal

Liverpool have not spent as much as their rivals over the past decade as their squad has not needed revamping for the past four seasons, according to Kevin Campbell.

The ex-Premier League striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the Reds are in the market for players to develop, rather than players to come into their starting XI.

On Monday (7 February), the CIES Football Observatory published the net spend of all clubs in Europe big-five leagues over the past decade.

It was revealed that Liverpool’s net spend was just £291.5million.

That puts them 14th in Europe and behind fellow English clubs Man United, Man City, Chelsea, Aston Villa, Arsenal, Everton and West Ham.

When asked for his assessment of Liverpool’s net spend, Campbell told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs: “Everyone concerned deserve a lot of praise.

“The difficult part for Liverpool is, how do you add to a squad that is full of so many good players. This squad has been right up there for the past four years and I mean right up there. They have been top, top class for four years.

“If you are going to be recruiting players, you have to be recruiting to develop, not recruiting to play.

“I know they went out and got Jota but there is not many Jotas around. They have to cut their cloth accordingly. They have do be very particular in who they recruit and that’s what they’ve done.

“If there’s somebody that they need they will go and get him but they won’t sign player willy-nilly.

“Hats off to [Jurgen] Klopp, [Michael] Edwards and everyone concerned.”
