Liverpool news: This may be real reason Fabinho dodged red v Man City amid controversial footage - pundit

Alan Hutton has admitted Fabinho and Thiago were lucky not to be sent off for Liverpool in Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Manchester City.

The former Scotland defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the officials, fronted by referee Anthony Taylor, did not want to “ruin the game” by issuing a red card.

Fabinho, 28, was booked for a dangerous-looking tackle on Bernardo Silva, while Thiago avoided a second yellow for an incident with Kevin de Bruyne.

Footage of both incidents was relayed by Sky Sports (11 April).

Hutton admitted the Brazilians were lucky but suggested the officials wanted to protect the “spectacle” of the “showpiece” fixture.

“Fabinho got booked. There were a couple of tackles where he was a little bit off it,” Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.

“He was possibly lucky. In games like that, high-stake games, if people get sent off, especially early, the game’s gone. It’s ruined.

“I understand from a referee’s point of view, you’re trying to manage the game correctly. You don’t want to be rushing in and carding people.

“When you give away that many fouls, you’ve been booked, you’re definitely running the risk of picking up a second.

“It seemed like they tried to allow the game to flow. This is a huge spectacle shown all around the world. If you’re too quick to judge and get the cards out, then you know what can happen. The game’s ruined.

“This is the showpiece for the Premier League. I do understand why they’re trying to keep it to a minimum.

“That being said, if a foul’s a foul and you need booked, you should be booking people. It is quite as simple as that.”
