Liverpool news: Wyness issues verdict on potential Anfield expansion
Former Everton chief Keith Wyness has claimed Liverpool are not likely to be able to further expand Anfield in future.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – praised the Reds’ “very creditable” financial performance for the 2022-23 campaign.
The Anfield Road expansion is nearing completion and should see Liverpool’s famous stadium reach a capacity of over 61,000.
Despite the ongoing construction work meaning a reduced capacity, the Merseysiders recorded a loss of just £9million for the 2022-23 campaign.
Another Anfield expansion not likely to be possible for Liverpool
Fenway Sports Group have also overseen the expansion of Anfield’s Main Stand, which was completed in 2016.
Liverpool’s ground still falls short of the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Old Trafford and the London Stadium – and Wyness warned there is not likely to be room for more improvement.
He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I think it’s a very creditable performance financially in the 2022-23 season, they did very well.
“The numbers look very positive for Liverpool.
“They’ve done well on the commercial side and they’ve expanded a lot on the retail side with the Nike deal.
“If they can get the issues with transportation around Anfield sorted, then it will be a big positive for Liverpool.
“There are potentially going to be new trams and a new train station in the area.
“In terms of growing Anfield, I think it’s at its limit currently. There’s not much more room for improvement.

“It’s a big tick for Fenway Sports Group, they’ve done very well. They’ve managed to show stability, and that is always the key thing.
“A lot of clubs should see that and follow in their footsteps. Where there is stability, there tends to be success.”
