‘Liverpool open to selling Harvey Elliott as talks open’
Liverpool will be open to selling Harvey Elliott in the summer transfer window if he does not commit to a contract extension at Anfield.
That is according to former Man United and Blackburn chief scout Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected within the game, as he exclusively told Football Insider that they do not want to end up in the same position as they are in this season.
Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold have all entered the final year of their contracts and will be available to leave for free come the summer.
Now, Football Insider exclusively revealed on 23 January that talks over a new contract for Elliott in the coming weeks amid speculation over his future.
The 21-year-old’s current contract is set to run until 2027 and will still have two years remaining come the summer, but that may be the last chance to maximise profits from his sale.
With plenty of competition for a starting place in his position, the England under-21 international will have to decide whether he sees his long-term future at Anfield.
Significant update on Harvey Elliott’s Liverpool future today
However, the former scout who has a wealth of experience in top-level player recruitment after over a decade at Man United during their most successful period, insisted that the Reds want to keep him, but will prepare for other eventualities.
“Liverpool want to keep him,” he told Football Insider.
“However, they might be open to selling if they can get a decent fee for him, which would allow them to go back into the transfer market and strengthen other areas of their team.
“If he doesn’t sign a new deal, they won’t want him to run down his contract like we’ve seen with Salah, Van Dijk and Alexander-Arnold.
“There’s a lot of competition for places in his position, that’s the reason he hasn’t been in the side.
“They’ve got players like Mac Allister and Szoboszlai there.
“So letting him go and bringing in some good money might be something they look to do.
“He’s been a bit of a fringe player, but he’s still a very good option to have.

“You need those types of players in your squad who have the quality but can go in and out of the side.
“Whether he’ll be happy playing that role long-term will be up to him.“
