Experienced international wants Liverpool transfer this month - L'Equipe

By Matt Farr

Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho wants to move to another English club, according to a report.

French publication L’Equipe claims that Sakho wants to leave Anfield this month after falling heavily out of favour this season.

The 26-year-old France international has yet to appear under Jurgen Klopp this term, and is expected to be shipped out this month.

The arrival of Joel Matip and Ragnar Klavan to the club in the summer has forced Sakho further down the pecking order, and the return of youngster Joe Gomez from injury this week is not likely to help his chances of returning to the frame.

Sakho, who has accumulated 28 senior France appearances, was set to begin the campaign as a key part of Klopp’s first-team plans, but a pre-season fall-out with the former Borussia Dortmund boss saw him demoted to the reserve team.

He was sent home from the club’s tour of the USA after question marks were raised about his attitude, and is now deemed as surplus to requirements.

Sakho has made five appearances for Liverpool’s U23 side this season. However, despite interest from abroad, the Reds outcast insists he would prefer to remain in England, and a move to another Premier League side could well be on the cards in the coming weeks.

Football Insider verdict:

It is quite clear that Mamadou Sakho has no future at Liverpool, and the January transfer window represents the perfect opportunity for him to finally put an end to his Anfield misery. Despite the doubts over his attitude, Sakho is still a quality player. He was one of Europe’s best young defenders not so long ago, and became the youngest player to captain Paris Saint-Germain in 2007 – at the age of just 19. He may not have featured at all this season, but Sakho still has plenty of Premier League experience, while he also has 28 international caps for France. He would slot very well into the defence of many other Premier League sides, and there are several out there looking for a new defender this month. The likes of Southampton and West Ham would be particularly suited to Sakho, but there is also interest from abroad.
