Kieran Maguire fumes at John Henry as Liverpool seal Government U-turn - 'job done'

Liverpool have got their wish after successfully lobbying the Government to put plans to introduce an independent regulator for English football on ice.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the latest noises coming from Lizz Truss’s new cabinet.

The recommendations of the Fan-Led Review for English Football, which included more fan representation at board level and greater enforcement of financial protocols, were endorsed by previous prime minister Boris Johnson.

But The Times reported on Wednesday (21 September) that Truss is now considering blocking the introduction of an independent regulator and giving football a deadline to come up with a viable alternative.

Maguire claims that Liverpool owner John Henry, one of the chief architects of last April’s aborted Super League plot, will be “absolutely delighted”.

“The likes of John Henry and the Glazers don’t want any scrutiny or fan involvement beyond the bare minimum,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“They didn’t like the idea of having an independent regulator that could potentially have restricted the ability to have Super League mark two and represent the views of fans.

“These owners are focused on maximizing their financial return. Football to them is not a sport. They don’t attend the matches.

“Their focus is purely on financial return and, therefore, the noises that are coming out of the Government will absolutely delight them.

“The lobbyists that are employed by the Premier League clubs to deny, denigrate and deflect the proposals of the Review will consider this a job well done.”
