Liverpool owners FSG accept ‘toxic’ atmosphere could trigger Arne Slot sack

Liverpool’s owners Fenway Sports Group have accepted that they may have to sack manager Arne Slot this summer amid a “disconnect” with the fans, sources have told Football Insider.

There are fears among the hierarchy at Anfield that the atmosphere among the supporters is leaning towards becoming “toxic,” and there is an acceptance that sections of the support have turned against the Dutchman for good.

Sources say that the club hierarchy are determined to avoid the feeling around the club worsening any further, and as a result, they are prepared to sack Slot at the end of the season if it is clear that there is no way back for him.

Liverpool have been patient with the 47-year-old and are keen to try and give him as long as possible to turn things around, but they are expecting it to be very difficult for him to win the fanbase back.

Slot has been facing significant pressure for several weeks now, and the board are set to review his position at the end of the campaign, unless there is a drastic change before then.

Arne Slot’s fate may already be sealed

Liverpool’s defence of their Premier League title has certainly not gone to plan this season, and they are in danger of not even qualifying for the Champions League.

They are still in this year’s edition of the competition, but with a daunting quarter-final clash against PSG on the horizon, it will be a tall order for them to progress any further.

The Merseysiders saw their hopes of another route to a trophy ended last weekend, when they were dismantled 4-0 by Manchester City in the quarter-final of the FA Cup.

There was an angry reaction from Dominik Szoboszlai towards the travelling Liverpool fans after the full-time whistle, while several supporters who had left the game early were also heard chanting Xabi Alonso’s name, as they made their feelings towards Slot clear.

The disconnect at Liverpool is clear at the moment, and there is already a feeling among the hierarchy that the situation may have already gone beyond repair for Slot long-term.

The title-winning boss has been afforded plenty of time to try and steady the ship, but he has been unable to so far, and he could be about to pay the price.

Spanish contacts clear over Xabi Alonso and Liverpool links

Former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness told Football Insider last week that his contacts in Spain have indicated that Alonso is ready and waiting for the Liverpool job, should Slot be given the boot.

The former Bayer Leverkusen boss was axed by Real Madrid back in January, and he has since emerged as one of the leading candidates to take the reins at Anfield.

He has remained out of work since then, but that could be about to change ahead of next season, if the idea of a move to the Premier League appeals to him.

The 44-year-old made over 200 appearances for Liverpool during his playing career, and scored the equaliser in the Reds’ famous penalty shootout win over AC Milan in the 2005 Champions League final.
