Liverpool plan for USA games could depend on Spanish ‘threat’- Stefan Borson

The Premier League could agree with Liverpool chiefs and play games overseas if they deem their popularity in the US to be under threat from other leagues.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that La Liga could threaten the Premier League’s dominance in the United States.

Liverpool chairman Tom Werner has said he is “determined” to see a Premier League match played in New York.

La Liga have already announced plans to stage league matches overseas from the 2025-26 season onwards.

As revealed by The Guardian, Fifa have begun the process of league games being played overseas with a group formed to “issue recommendations” on the topic.

Borson explained that the Premier League will also likely face resistance from the independent regulator.

“One point of interest is what the other leagues will do,” Borson told Football Insider.

The Premier League will not want La Liga for example to build a presence in the US and threaten the Premier League’s popularity.

It has a dominant position at the moment and they will want to maintain that presence.

How it does that is going to be a challenge going forward.

Clearly there’s going to be a lot of resistance from all sorts of places in England.

They could also face resistance from the independent regulator and the government in terms of playing games outside of England.
